HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall Football dropped a 45-0 contest to No. 18 Penn State in front of 108,489 fans at Beaver Stadium on Saturday afternoon in University Park, Pa.
"We couldn't get anything going – offense, defense, special teams," Marshall head coach Tony Gibson said. "And when we did, we had a penalty that killed some drives. That was not my expectation, the kids' expectations and it's not an indication of who we are. We need to get back and clean some things up. We can't let it beat us twice."
The 108,409 fans were the most a Marshall football team has ever played in front of, eclipsing the 106,520 at Tennessee in 2003.
Marshall quarterback Carlos Del Rio-Wilson was efficient in the passing game, finishing 17 of 25 for 102 yards in the contest while leading the team with 30 rushing yards.
Toby Payne caught a career-high eight passes for 55 yards for the Herd.
Defensively, safety Caleb Clark-Glover had a career-best 11 tackles while aiding a Marshall defense that limited the Penn State rushing attack to 3.6 yards per carry.
In his first collegiate action, true freshman punter Cooper Heimbach punted eight times for an average of 42.6 per punt with four punts inside the 20-yard line.
Marshall returns to action for its 2026 home opener next Saturday when the team hosts Middle Tennessee for Hall of Fame Weekend. The Saturday night kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Joan C. Edwards Stadium.
