Herd Women Victorious In JAM THE CAM II

2/1/2003

HUNTINGTON, W.VA.-The Marshall women?s basketball (6-12, 2-5 MAC) ended a six game skid with a 53-49 overtime win over Central Michigan (8-11, 2-6 MAC) in front of 4,469 fans at the Cam Henderson Center Saturday afternoon. Sikeetha Shepard-Hall led MU with a career-high 27 points.

Saturday?s game was a back-and-forth affair, with the largest lead being nine for either team the entire way. Central Michigan, who fell behind 28-19 three minutes into the second half, responded with a 9-0 run to tie the game at 28 six minutes later. Marshall scored the next five points and led for the rest of the half until the Chippewas? Casey Manning dropped in a running layup with four seconds to go in regulation to send the game into overtime.

The overtime period was a see-saw battle, and with 49 seconds left to go in the game, the score was tied at 49. Twenty seconds later, Christina Harbin knocked down a three-pointer from the right wing to give Marshall a 52-49 lead. CMU?s Desiree Eidson missed a straightaway three-pointer with 11 seconds to go, and Harbin sealed the game with a made free throw in the waning seconds.

?I don?t think anybody was disappointed with this effort,? said Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick. ?We had a lot of people step up and make some big-time plays.

?Nothing came easy this afternoon,? he continued. ?We were not exceptional on offense, but we were very, very good on defense, and that?s what won us the game.?

Marshall outrebounded Central Michigan, 49-27, their largest rebounding margin of the season, but could not put away the Chippewas because of turnovers and a poor field goal percentage. MU committed 23 turnovers, and shot only 34.6% from the floor. CMU shot only 25.5% from the field, but made 8-of-18 free throws to stay in the game.

Amy Reed also contributed mightily in today?s win with ten points and 15 rebounds. It was her first double-double of the season, and it tied a career-high for rebounds. Catie Knable also had her seventh double-digit rebound game of the season with ten.

Desiree Eidson led Central Michigan with 15 points.

MU closes out a three-game homestand with a matchup against geographic rival Ohio Wednesday night in the Henderson Center. Tip-time is set for 7 p.m.
