Marshall Women Get Convincing Win Over Bowling Green, 69-50
2/26/2003
Bowling Green, Ohio? The Marshall women?s basketball team got their tenth win of the season, and a school record sixth Mid-American Conference win, with a 69-50 victory Wednesday night at Anderson Arena. Marshall improves to 10-15, 6-8 in the MAC. Bowling Green drops to 11-14, 4-10 in conference play.
Marshall took a 33-24 lead into the halftime break behind Nadia Swanigan?s (Sylacauga, Ala.) seven points and six rebounds. The Herd out-rebounded and out-shot the Falcons in the first period, and held Bowling Green scoreless near the end of the period for a four-minute span, which allowed Marshall?s offense to break open a back-and-forth affair to the nine-point margin heading into the break. Amy Reed (Schuykill Haven, Pa.) also added six points in the first half.
At the under 12 timeout in the second half, Marshall maintained an eight point lead, 45-37. Clutch jumpers by guard Amy Smith (Ramstein, Germany), and good free throw shooting by Reed allowed the Herd to play with a ten-point cushion the rest of the way. The Herd?s lead grew to as many as 20 late in the game.
?I thought we played good defense and did a good job on the boards,? said Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick. ?We had some post players step up and have great games tonight. We got an inside presence tonight, which was a big key. We didn?t have to rely too much on the three-point shot like we have had to in the last few games.?
Marshall had four players in double figures in the winning effort. The Herd was led by Reed, who scored 16 points and had ten rebounds, her second double-double of the season. Smith added 14 points, Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (Houston, Tex.) poured in 13 points, while Ida Dotson (Tombstone, Ariz.) had ten points in the winning effort.
Bowling Green got a 16-point effort from Francine Miller. Jill Lause also added ten points for the Falcons.
The Herd close out the home portion of their regular season schedule with a game against Akron Saturday at the Henderson Center. Seniors Ida Dotson and Amy Reed will be honored before the 1 p.m. contest.
