YPSILANTI, Mich. - Despite a phenomenal 40-point effort by Ronald Blackshear, Marshall University dropped a 90-81 decision to Eastern Michigan University Monday in Mid-American Conference men?s basketball action at the EMU Convocation Center.
Blackshear, a junior from Camilla, Ga., scored a season-high 40 points, however Eastern Michigan managed to use a balanced transition attack to counter the Marshall standout and get the win. Blackshear connected on a season-high eight three-pointers, grabbed a team-high five rebounds, and contributed two assists in the losing effort. Blackshear?s 40 points were his highest scoring total since he netted 44 in a win at Akron last season.
The Eagles (9-9 overall, 3-6 MAC) jumped out to a 52-39 lead in the first half and managed to stay on top despite several second-half Marshall runs. EMU was led by Michael Ross? 17 point, nine rebound, and seven assist effort. Steve Pettyjohn added 14 points, while Ricky Cottrill netted 13 for the Eagles.
Marshall (9-9, 5-5 MAC) received 13 points from Monty Wright and 11 from David Anderson. The Herd?s leading rebounder was junior Marvin Black who pulled down eight in 26-minutes of action before fouling out with 4:56 to play.
The Thundering Herd commited 17 turnovers and shot 46.8% from the field, while EMU turned the ball over 11 times and shot 53.6% from the field.
MU cut the Eastern Michigan lead down to 52-48 by opening the second half with a 9-0 run, however, at the 15:52 mark Black was whistled for a foul and then charged a technical that gave EMU five points off of free-throws in a one second span.
Marshall will attempt to get back on track when it travels to Kalamazoo, Mich., for a 7 p.m. game with Western Michigan Wednesday.
