Cleveland, Ohio--The Marshall Thundering Herd could not overcome a hot-shooting Toledo Rocket team in an 80-66 loss in the Kraft MAC Women?s Basketball Quarterfinals at the Gund Arena Wednesday afternoon.
The Rockets were 21-of-40 ( 52.5%) from the floor, including seven of 13 from three-point land. Marshall struggled from the field, making 23-of-61 (37.7%) shots, and only 3-of-13 (23.1%) from beyond the arc.
Marshall hung around early against the #1 seeded Rockets, but at the 14:02 mark in the first half, UT put together a 9-0 run to put the Thundering Herd away. MU cut the Toledo lead to 23-21 on a Christina Harbin (Miami, Fla.) three-pointer, but again the Rockets responded, this time reeling off twelve consecutive points to push their lead to 35-21. Toledo took an 11-point lead into the halftime break, 35-24.
In the second half, the Rockets continued to knock down shots to keep the Herd away. The Herd cut the lead to nine with a little over a minute to go, but Toledo made free throws to send Marshall back to Huntington.
?I thought Toledo played well offensively tonight, and their 2-3 zone we didn?t have any answers for that in the first 25 minutes of the game,? said Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick. ?They did a lot of things to take us out of the game, and you have to tip your hat to Toledo.?
Wednesday afternoon?s contest was the first ever MAC Quarterfinal appearance for the Thundering Herd women?s basketball team.
Marshall was led by Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (Houston, Tex.) who scored 24 points, her sixth 20-point effort this season. Amy Reed (Schuykill Haven, Pa.) was the only other Herd player in double-figures with 15 points. Forward Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) had ten rebounds, her 14th game this season with ten or more rebounds.
The Herd ended their season at 12-17. Toledo continues with a semifinal game tomorrow afternoon against the Kent State/Western Michigan quarterfinal matchup.
