Women's Swimming Announces Four Signings for 2003 Season
4/28/2003
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- Marshall head swimming coach Leonard Kraus has announced the signings of four swimmers for the upcoming season, two of which are native West Virginians.
Cara Davison and Kim Becker have signed on to swim with the second-year program along with Trista Konya and Britney Csonka, who will join the team as walk-ons.
Davison, a Chesterton, Ind., native, placed third in the 50-yard freestyle at the 2003 Indiana state championships with a time of 24.08.
"Cara possesses a ton of tools to swim fast," Kraus said. "She will be a major force in the Mid-American Conference in the freestyle and breaststroke events."
Becker comes from Marquette High School in Wildwood, Mo. She has consistently placed in the top eight at her respective state's championship meets over her freshman through junior years.
"I am very happy to have another breaststroker with her talent," Kraus said of Becker. "She has made steady improvements over the course of her high school career, improvements that will continue while at Marshall."
Konya, out of Fairmont, W.Va., excelled in the 200 and 500 freestyle events at the West Virginia state meet, placing in the top eight in each.
"Trista will add some much needed depth in the middle and distance events," Kraus said.
Csonka was also a top-eight finisher at the West Virginia state championships, specializing in the 100 backstroke and the 200 individual medley.
"She is a nice, steady performer who I envision having a good career with the Thundering Herd," Kraus said of the Bridgeport, W.Va., native.
Marshall relaunched its women's swimming and diving program in 2002, after a one-year stint in 1974. Freshman Milla Kuurto was named to the All-MAC First Team, while sophomore Erika Nilsson earned second team honors in Marshall's first year back to competition.
