Rushing Attack Shines in Scrimmage

8/20/2003

Huntington, W.Va. - If Wednesday's afternoon scrimmage at Marshall University Stadium is any indication, Butchie Wallace and Earl Charles should see plenty of carries this season.

Wallace, a senior, carried the ball for 73 yards and three touchdowns, while junior college transfer Earl Charles rushed the ball eight times for 57 yards in the officiated scrimmage that last roughly an hour and a half, pitting the first-team offense and defense against their second-team counterparts.

Charles said he is eager to get the season underway.

"I just can't wait to play in my first Division I game," Charles said. "I think we have a lot of great options in the backfield."

Quarterback Stan Hill completed 11 of 20 passes for 181 yards and two touchdowns against one interception.

Darrius Watts and Jason Rader caught four passes each. Watts piled up 104 yards, including an impressive 66-yard touchdown reception, while Rader added 41 yards, including a 12-yard touchdown.

Other standouts included Marcus Hairston, who recorded one and a half sacks, and junior Tremel Guillory who returned a punt 67 yards for touchdown.

Marshall is scheduled to continue workouts Thursday with a 3:30 p.m. practice.
