9/29/2003

Johnson earned two second place finishes in singles and doubles action this weekend.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Marshall University tennis team completed its first weekend of fall play at the Virginia Tech Fall Invitational, Sunday. The Herd turned in a strong showing, placing players in both singles and doubles final matches.

?For our first tournament this season we were pleased with our performance. We're excited that we'll be playing back to back weekends, we are going to work on some things this week and be ready to compete at the Kentucky Tournament,? head coach John Mercer said.

Turning in a stellar performance for the Herd was senior Jessica Johnson (Sewickly, Pa.) who represented the Herd in both singles and doubles final matches. Johnson came up with a big win over Wake Forest?s Ashlee Davis (6-3, 6-3) to move into the final match. In the final round of play Johnson was defeated by first seeded Karin Coetzee (Wake Forest) 6-0, 6-3.

?Jessica did really well this weekend,? Mercer said. ?She played some of the best tennis I?ve seen from her in a year. All of her off-season work really is beginning to pay off.?

Also stepping up for the Herd this weekend was junior Joelle Good (Switzerland) who advanced to the semifinals in the Flight B singles bracket, before falling to Virginia Tech?s Felice Lam in three match sets (6-3, 0-6, 6-2).

?Joelle won some big matches this weekend,? Mercer said. ?She looked really good this weekend and we are excited for what is to come.?

In doubles action, Marshall placed players in both Flight A and Flight B doubles finals. Johnson and junior Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) advanced to the Flight A final with an 8-4 win over Wake Forest, but fell in the final to Karin Coetzee and Aimee Smith (Wake Forest) 8-4. In Flight B doubles action junior Danielle Hock (England) and senior Megan Skalasky (East Lansing, Mich.) defeated Rutgers, East Tennessee State, and Virginia Tech to earn a shot in the final match, but Virginia Tech?s duo of Felice Lam and Elisa Kinard captured the Flight B title 6-3, 7-6.

Marhall will return to action Friday when they travel to Chicago, Ill to compete in the 2003 Loyola Invitational.
