UB Bulls Await Herd Women on Saturday
1/16/2004
The Marshall women?s basketball team is gearing up for a Mid-American Conference East Division clash with the University at Buffalo Bulls on Saturday at 7 p.m. at UB?s Alumni Arena.
Marshall (10-4, 2-2 MAC) will try to erase the memories from its 24-point home loss to Western Michigan on Wednesday. The Thundering Herd was outrebounded for the first time this season and allowed WMU?s Lori Crisman, a 7.8 points per game contributor, to score a career-high 30 points on 12-of-18 shooting to go along with 15 rebounds.
Marshall senior Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) tied her season-lows with four points and three rebounds versus Western Michigan, but is still averaging a double-double on the season with 10.0 ppg and 10.1 rpg. Freshman Modupe Ishola (Washington, D.C.) nabbed her first two career starts the last two games and has added a big presence in the paint for Royce Chadwick?s club. Ishola averaged 11 points and seven rebounds in that span, including a team-high 13 points against the Broncos.
Buffalo (2-9, 0-2 MAC) snapped a seven-game losing streak in its last game in a non-conference tilt at Cornell. The Bulls feature two of the top-10 leading rebounders in the MAC in seniors Jessica Kochendorfer and Kim Kilpela. Kochendorfer, a preseason all-MAC East Division selection, paces UB with 12.5 points and 7.8 rebounds per game while Kilpela drops 12.2 points and 7.6 rebounds per contest. Against Cornell on Monday, Kochendorfer set a school record and tied a MAC record with nine blocks and fell one block short of a triple-double (11 points, 10 rebounds).
Saturday?s contest will pit a Marshall team that gives up an average of 58.7 points per game (2nd best in MAC) and the Bulls who surrender a league-worst 75.1 ppg. UB is also last in the conference in field goal percentage defense (43.6) and turnover margin (-5.0). Marshall tops the MAC with a +3.2 turnover margin.
Marshall defeated the Bulls in overtime last season at the Cam Henderson Center, 62-59, in the Herd?s conference-opener. MU leads the all-time series, 5-4. The last time Marshall visited Alumni Arena, it came away with a 55-35 win over the Bulls on Feb. 13, 2002.
