BUFFALO, N.Y. ? Marshall allowed two 20-point scorers for the second straight contest on the way to its second Mid-American Conference loss in as many games, a 79-60 defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bulls in women?s basketball action from Alumni Arena.
Senior forward Jessica Kochendorfer poured in a team-high 24 points along with a season-high 13 rebounds to lead the Bulls (3-9, 1-2 MAC) to their first league win of the season. Sophomore guard Brooke Meunier scored 20 points with eight rebounds and five assists thanks in part to a career-high four 3-point field goals.
The Thundering Herd (10-5, 2-3 MAC) posted back-to-back losses for the second time this season after the Western Michigan tandem of Lori Crisman and Casey Rost contributed 20-plus points each on Wednesday, a 96-72 WMU win.
UB led by 10 points at the half as the Bull duo of Kochendorfer and Meunier entered intermission with 16 and 15 points, respectively. The pair accounted for 21 straight Buffalo points in an 11-minute first-half span, including two 3-pointers from Meunier and one for Kochendorfer.
Marshall had trouble controlling play in either end of the court all night long. The Thundering Herd attempted a season-high 36 3-point field goals, connecting on only seven from downtown (19.4 percent).
A Mary Pat Statler (New Cumberland, W.Va.) hot-shooting second half could not slow down the Bulls. Statler scored a Marshall career-high 19 points, 17 in the second half, on 8-of-16 shooting. The sophomore guard scored MU's first six points of the second half and 10 straight Herd points in a three-minute spurt.
Kim Griffin (Valdosta, Ga.) was the Herd?s only other double-digit scorer with 10 points. The junior also added eight assists for the second straight game.
Marshall was outrebounded 39-32, the second time this season the Herd was beaten on the glass. The Herd forced more turnovers and recorded more steals, but MU was 3-of-11 from the free throw line and shot only 37.3 percent from the floor to the Bulls? 54.5 percent. UB was a perfect 11-of-11 from the charity stripe.
?We play rebounding and running basketball, but we didn?t do either of those tonight,? Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. ?Nobody on our team played collectively good at both ends of the floor.?
Marshall will play its final non-conference game of the season on Wednesday when it faces intra-state rival West Virginia at the Charleston Civic Center at 5:30 p.m. The Herd resumes MAC play on Jan. 24 at Central Michigan.
