Men?s Basketball Inks Three In Early Signing Period
11/10/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall men?s basketball coach Ron Jirsa has announced the signing of three players, Travis Aikens of Daytona Beach Community College, Jean Francois Bro-Grebe of Northeastern (Co.) Junior College, and Markel Humphrey of Stockbridge High School in Stockbridge, Ga., to National Letters of Intent.
?I?m excited about these three players,? said Jirsa. ?They bring a high level of basketball ability and will contribute greatly to our basketball program and our campus community.?
Aikens, a 6?5 wing player from Orlando, Fla., currently attends Daytona Beach Community College, where he averaged ten points and 5.5 rebounds during the 2003-04 season. He is a 2003 graduate of Orlando Jones High School, where he averaged 12 points and six rebounds per game and was a second team all-state selection. He will have two years of eligibility with the Thundering Herd.
?Travis is a strong, shooting wing player who can drive and get to the basket,? said Jirsa. ?He is extremely aggressive and tough.?
Bro Grebe, from the Ivory Coast in West Africa, signed with Jirsa at the University of Dayton in November of 2002 but never played there. He enrolled at Northeastern (Co.) Junior College, but suffered a knee injury before the 2003-04 season and did not play. Ranked one of the top fifty prep players out of high school by several publications, the 6?9 Bro Grebe averaged 9.8 points, 10.5 rebounds, and 4.8 assists at Chamblee High School in Atlanta. He will have three years of eligibility when he arrives on the Marshall campus in 2005.
?Jean Francois is an extremely long forward who is a presence in the paint on both offense and defense,? said Jirsa. ?He plays the game with a great flair, and I?m sure our fans will love his enthusiasm.?
Marshall?s third signee is Markel Humphrey, a 6?4 left-handed shooting guard-forward from Stockbridge High School in Stockbridge, Ga. Humphrey averaged 18 points per contest last season as a junior in 2003-04.
?Markel is a smooth, versatile lefty who is a perfect fit for our style of play,? said Jirsa. He is a true freshman that, I believe, can be a cornerstone for many years to come.?
