- Box Score
TOLEDO, Ohio ? Behind a pair of 18-point performances from Mary Pat Statler (New Cumberland, W.Va.) and Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (Houston, Texas), the Marshall women?s basketball team defeated Toledo for the first time in school history, 61-56, on Saturday at Savage Hall.
Statler was 5-of-6 from the floor (6-for-6 from the free-throw line) while Shepard-Hall went 6-of-8. Both Marshall guards recorded two 3-point field goals on the night.
Marshall (13-9, 5-6 Mid-American Conference) posted a much-needed conference victory in a venue in which it had never won. Senior Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) recorded her ninth double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds.
The Herd led Toledo (10-13, 6-6 MAC) by as many as 18 points in the first half. The Rockets were ice cold in the opening frame, shooting only 26.9 percent and 0-for-9 from 3-point land.
Marshall used solid guard play from junior L?erin Scott (Georgetown, Ky.) and freshman Teyonka Hodge (Washington, D.C.) to tame the Rockets. Scott made her first career start and tallied five assists while Hodge netted six points, five rebounds, four assists and a steal.
Toledo?s Danielle Bishop tied her career high with 20 points while Kelly Walker scored 12.
The Herd's victory gives them 13 on the season, setting a MU MAC-era record for wins in a season. The previous best was last year's 12-win campaign by MU in head coach Royce Chadwick's second season in Huntington.
MU outrebounded UT 38-27. The Herd finished with their best field goal percentage (44.2 percent) since Jan. 24 at Central Michigan.
Marshall will return to action on Monday when it visits MAC East rival Kent State.
