Late Run Moves Kent State Past MU Women, 64-50

KENT, Ohio ? Kent State?s 12-2 run with under three minutes left in regulation did in the Marshall Thundering Herd and lifted the Golden Flashes to a 64-50 Mid-American Conference women?s basketball win on Monday at the M.A.C. Center.
Marshall (13-10, 5-7 MAC) shot only 32 percent from the floor (16-of-50), but managed to stay within striking distance of the Golden Flashes (15-8, 8-4 MAC) for much of the game. The Thundering Herd trailed by only four points with 3:20 left before KSU?s game-clinching run.
Kent State forward Lindsay Shearer scored a game-high 21 points with four rebounds and three steals while sophomore guard Malika Willoughby dished out nine assists. Junior guard Melissa DeGrate posted 16 points and junior center Andrea Csaszar tied her season high with six blocks and added nine rebounds and five assists.
Marshall tied its season-low with 16 field goals made in its final regular season road game. Sophomore Sikeetha Shepard-Hall (Houston, Texas) scored a team-high 10 points with five rebounds and two assists. Freshman Modupe Ishola (Washington, D.C.) came off the bench late in the second half and provided a spark by scoring eight points (4-of-6) with three rebounds in eight minutes of play.
The Herd won the opening tip and swiftly scored on a Kim Griffin (Valdosta, Ga.) layup off a feed from Nadia Swanigan (Sylacauga, Ala.). The two teams would trade field goals and free throws through the game?s first eight-plus minutes with Marshall taking an 11-9 lead, its biggest of the night, at 12:24. Kent State tied it at 11 on a Csaszar jumper and quickly struck again with a Heather Harris 3-pointer to seize the lead it would not relinquish the rest of the game.
?I?m proud of our team,? Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. ?Our young kids didn?t get their heads down and played with all the heart they had.?
On a night that the MAC?s worst free-throw shooting team recorded its best percentage of the season at 80 percent (12-of-15, 10-of-11 in the first half), the perimeter and inside shooting failed Chadwick?s squad for one of its worst performances of 2003-04. Marshall also turned the ball over 22 times, 10 of which stemmed from the Herd bench, to the Flashes? 13 miscues. KSU would score 24 of its points off Herd turnovers.
KSU?s win snapped a two-game losing streak to Marshall and gave the Flashes wins in six of their last seven games.
MU senior Catie Knable (Floyd Knobs, Ind.) fouled out for the first time this season with 56 seconds remaining in the game. She grabbed eight rebounds with six points.
After playing three road games in six days, the Herd will get a chance to rest until Sunday?s meeting with Northern Illinois at 12 noon at the Cam Henderson Center. That game will be broadcast live on Fox Sports Net Ohio.
