Marshall Men Face Pivotal MAC Test Sunday Against Ohio

2/28/2004

ATHENS, Ohio - The Thundering Herd take on geographic rival Ohio Sunday afternoon in an all-important Mid-American Conference game at the Convocation Center in Athens. The Herd has not won on the Bobcats' home floor since the 1997-98 season.

Marshall enters Sunday's contest with a 9-15 record, 6-9 in the Mid-American Conference, and the losers of three straight. The Herd most recently lost a one-point contest to Ball State Tuesday night in the Henderson Center, 79-78. Marvin Black leads the Herd in points and rebounds, averaging 13.7 and 7.4 respectively.

The Bobcats (9-17, 6-9) come into the game with the exact same conference record as the Herd. Ohio is 7-3 in games played at the Convo overall, and have posted a 6-1 MAC record on their home floor. Jaivon Harris leads the Bobcats in scoring, averaging 15.8 points per game, while Thomas Stevens adds 10.4 per contest. Both have combined to make 128 three-pointers on the season, and as a team, the Bobcats have made 194 shots from beyond the arc, 51 more than Marshall's season team total.

Ohio leads the all-time series between the two schools, 46-41, although Marshall won earlier this season in Huntington on January 24th, 74-60, a victory that snapped a four-game losing skid to the Bobcats. Since reentering the MAC in 1997-98, Marshall is 1-5 at the Convocation Center, with their lone win coming in ?97-98, 72-63.

In the two teams' earlier meeting, Enoch Bunch had 15 points off the bench to lead the Thundering Herd past the Bobcats, 74-60, at the Cam Henderson Center. Trailing 36-31 at the break, Marshall outscored Ohio, 43-24, midway through the second half to pull away with the win. David Anderson sparked a 20-2 run over a six-minute span that proved to be the difference. Anderson scored 12 of his 14 points during that time, while also adding two high-energy offensive rebounds and steals to give Marshall some much needed momentum to cruise to victory.

Sunday's game will be televised on the Ohio Sports Network, with tip-off set for 2 p.m. The game can be seen locally in Huntington on WSAZ-TV and on the ESPN Full Court package nationwide. Satellite coordinates for the game are SBS 6, Transponder 7 on the KU Band. The contest will also be carried on armed forces radio across the globe.
