Florida State Edges Marshall Tennis, 4-2

5/15/2004

NASHVILLE - The Marshall University women's tennis team gave 27th-ranked Florida State all it wanted Saturday in first round NCAA women's tennis action at Vanderbilt University.

"I think we played exceptionally hard, and Jessica played unbelievable," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "We got back to the tournament this year and we had to play really well to beat Florida State today and we didn't play quite well enough."

The 55th-ranked Thundering Herd, appearing in its third consecutive NCAA tournament, captured the doubles point with wins at #1 and #3 to start the match off with a 1-0 advantage, and Marshall's #1 singles player Jessica Johnson (Senior from Pittsburgh, Pa.) cruised to an impressive 6-1, 6-1 win over Florida State's nationally-ranked Anca Dumitrescu. However, the Seminoles managed to pick-up wins at the 2, 3, 4, and 5 singles positions to capture the 4-2 win and advance to the second round.

Marshall's record-setting season comes to an end with an overall record of 22-5. The Thundering Herd doubles team of Johnson and junior Ashley Kroh will, however, participate in the NCAA Doubles Championship next week at the University of Georgia.
