Marshall Women?s Tennis Team Recognition Reception Wednesday
6/4/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? A reception, to honor the Marshall University women?s tennis team for its outstanding 2004 season, will be held from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Wednesday, June 9, at the Guyan Golf and Country Club in Huntington.
The event is free and open to the public, however those attending the event are asked to honor the club?s dress code. No jeans please.
Marshall posted an impressive 22-5 overall record in 2004, that was highlighted by a third-consecutive Mid-American Conference Championship, a third straight NCAA Tournament berth, and an appearance in the NCAA Doubles National Championship.
This season, the Thundering Herd?s Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh became the first women?s tennis players in Mid-American Conference and Marshall history to earn All-America honors with an amazing run to the finals of the NCAA Doubles Championship. They are the first Marshall Olympic sport student-athletes to finish as NCAA National Runners-up.
The Thundering Herd women?s tennis program also recorded its highest national ranking ever (46th during the season, 55th final), placed three players on All-MAC teams, saw head coach John Mercer capture MAC Coach of the Year honors and assistant coach Laurie Mercer earn East Region Assistant Coach of the Year honors, and for the second straight season did not lose a match in conference play.
