Women's Basketball 2004-05 Schedule Announced
8/25/2004
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. ? Marshall University head women?s basketball coach Royce Chadwick announced on Wednesday the Thundering Herd?s 2004-05 game schedule, its final year of competition in the Mid-American Conference before moving to Conference USA in 2005-06.
For the third consecutive year, Marshall will open its regular season at home in the Fifth Third MU Classic. This year?s field of teams includes Lehigh and UNC-Asheville, who will open the tournament on Nov. 19 at 5 p.m., and the Herd?s first opponent, Texas-Pan American. Marshall defeated the Lady Broncs 74-59 last season in Edinburg, Texas, and the two squads will clash once again in the day?s final game at 7 p.m.
The tournament circuit continues the following weekend (Nov. 27-28) when Marshall travels to the Empire State for the Time Warner Classic, hosted by Binghamton (N.Y.) University. The Herd will take on the host Bearcats on day one before awaiting Brown or Robert Morris in the consolation/championship game on day two.
Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center for a pair of non-conference games in early December, including the fourth installation of Jam the Cam. This year?s raucous crowd will see the Herd battle the Southeastern Conference?s Kentucky Wildcats on Dec. 12.
Another pair of tournaments follow, at UCF (Dec. 18-19) and Maryland (Dec. 29-30), before the conference schedule gets underway. Marshall will take on traditional rival Miami (Ohio) at home on Jan. 5 to open MAC play. Kent State, which Marshall upset in the quarterfinals of the 2004 MAC Tournament, will get its first shot at revenge when the Herd travels to Kent, Ohio, on Jan. 8.
The annual Toyota Capital Classic versus intrastate rival West Virginia will take place on Jan. 11 in Charleston, W.Va.
?We?ve got all of the top conferences in the country represented, from our Jam the Cam game with Kentucky, to a tournament at Maryland and our annual game with West Virginia,? Chadwick said. ?We?re also pleased to once again be able to host the Fifth Third MU Classic this year, which is great for us.?
Marshall, 18-12 in 2003-04, will have a grueling stretch toward the end of the season to end its MAC road schedule. The Herd will visit reigning MAC Player of the Year Casey Rost and the Western Michigan Broncos on Feb. 16, return for a home date with Buffalo on Feb. 19, before again hitting the road for back-to-back contests at Bowling Green (Feb. 23) and Eastern Michigan (Feb. 26). EMU, which ended Marshall?s season in the conference tournament semifinals, defeated BGSU in the MAC Tournament championship game last season.
?I?m very excited about our schedule this season,? said Chadwick. ?We feel good about all of our players returning to attack a schedule like this.?
Marshall will play two exhibition games before the regular season begins, Nov. 7 versus West Virginia Wesleyan and Nov. 12 versus Kentucky State. Both games are at the Henderson Center.
