Tennis Completes First Day at William and Mary Invitational

9/24/2004

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Marshall tennis team kicked off its 2004 fall season today at the 12th annual William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., in competition with eight other quality teams from the East Coast.

Highlighting the day for the Herd in the pools of singles and doubles action was the doubles duo of seniors Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) and Joelle Good (Zurich Switzerland) picking up two wins to advance into the semifinal round in Flight A doubles. The tandem notched an opening win over Anat Elazari and Ashley James of Virginia Tech and then downed No. 56 ranked William and Mary pair, Candice Fuchs and Megan Moulton-Levy, handily, 8-4. Hock and Good play Saturday in the semifinals at 8 a.m.

?We are thrilled with the way Joelle and Danielle played,? Marshall head coach John Mercer said. ?To beat a team that good was a great way to start the day.?

Also in doubles action, Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) and Alizee Paradis (Quebec City, Canada), picked up a win in their opener in Flight B Doubles against Arechavaleta/Stadelmann of North Carolina State. The duo dropped their next match in the quarterfinals to the No. 3 seeded pair of de Guzman/Sherbakov of William and Mary.

In singles play, freshman Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) advanced to the semifinals of Flight D with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the quarters over Kristen Carlin of Princeton. Schwartz plays Caroline Hammond of Virginia at 1:15 p.m., Saturday in the semifinals. Good was the only other Herd player to pick up a singles win, downing Ashley James of Virginia Tech 6-3, 6-3. Good fell to Clelia Delton of Duke 6-4, 6-0 in the quarterfinals.

All in all, Mercer was pleased with the way the Herd competed on its first day of action this fall.

?The effort was really good,? Mercer said. ?We?ve got to keep working hard to improve, but that?s why we came to this tournament. This gives us an indication of what we need to work on and see where we are against some very good competition. We?re going to come and play hard tomorrow and keep working to get better each day.?

Marshall will continue play tomorrow in the Invitational with doubles play starting at 8 a.m. and singles competition beginning at 11:30 a.m.
