Herd Tennis Wraps Up Play at William and Mary Invitational

9/26/2004

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. ? Freshman Jeanne Schwartz?s 7-5, 7-6 (6) win over Joanne Roth of Princeton highlighted the Herd tennis team?s third and final day of action at the William and Mary Invitational.

With the win, Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) picked up third place in Flight D singles. It was the Herd?s only victory on Sunday in Williamsburg, Va.

For the tournament, the performance of doubles duo Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) and Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) was the Herd?s biggest triumph. The tandem played Felice Lam and J.J. Larson of Virginia Tech in the finals of Flight A doubles. Larson and Lam picked up the 8-3 win, but Marshall head coach John Mercer said the performance of the senior duo was incredible.

?To get there and play in the finals against as many good teams as there are down there is amazing,? Mercer said. ?We?re really proud of them. They played really well all weekend.?

Marshall also had several chances on the day according to Mercer to pick up wins against very good opponents, but just couldn?t finish off the matches and come away with the points needed down the stretch.

?We proved this weekend that we have a very talented team,? Mercer said. ?We played hard, but it also showed us what we need to work on. We need to be more disciplined in some areas, but that will come with time and I?m glad we have another tournament next weekend to keep us in match mode.?

Marshall travels to Lexington, Ky., Friday for the University of Kentucky Invitational where the Herd will once again get to test its skills against some very tough nationally rated competition.
