Herd Tennis in Action This Weekend at UK Fall Invitational

9/30/2004

HUNTINGTON, W.Va ? After one weekend of playing experience under its belt, the 2004-05 Marshall tennis team will head to the courts in Lexington, Ky., this weekend for its second tournament of the fall season, the University of Kentucky Fall Invitational.

Last weekend, the Herd participated in the William and Mary Invitational in Williamsburg, Va., and saw several strong performances for it being early in the year against a tough national field. Seniors Joelle Good (Zurich Switzerland) and Danielle Hock (Wiggin, England) made it to the finals of Flight A doubles and freshman Shannon Brown (Overland Park, Kan.) placed third in Flight D singles to highlight the weekend for the Herd.

This weekend another challenging national field awaits the Herd at the UK Invitational. Abilene Christian, Arkansas, Illinois, Kentucky, Louisville, Middle Tennessee State, Ohio State, Purdue and William & Mary are the other teams competing in the tournament at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Complex.

?We?re looking forward to the weekend,? Marshall head coach John Mercer said. ?We want to build on the play from last weekend and keep working hard to play better with each match. This is going to be a really good tournament with a lot of really good teams to measure ourselves against.?

Eight of the ten teams in the field finished the 2004 season ranked in the top 75 in the final Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll.

The tournament consists of five 16-player singles flights and five doubles flights of eight teams a piece. Tournament results will be posted periodically each day throughout the weekend on ukathletics.com. Complete Marshall results will be posted at the end of each day of play on www.herdzone.com.
