LEXINGTON, Ky. - Day three of the University of Kentucky Fall Invitational saw several Thundering Herd players place in their respective pools. In fact, Marshall players won all but two matches on the day to finish strong.
"It was a good last day for us," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "Overall it was a good tournament for us because we got to play a ton of matches and picked up a lot of quality wins and gained a lot of confidence."
In Flight A singles, Shannon Brown defeated Lucia Vojtkova of Eastern Kentucky for her third win of the tournament to finish in 11th place in the top flight. Also in Flight A, Lynzee Kever finished in fourth place despite dropping the third place match to Annette Aksdal of Denver in a third set tie-breaker 10-8.
Jeanne Schwartz finished with a win in the fifth place match after knocking off Louisville's Bianca Gorbea. Rounding out Flight B for the Herd, freshman Kellie Schmitt knocked off Vita Moskalova in her final match.
Flight C saw the Herd's Karolina Soor advance all the way to the finals, but withdrew due to a foot injury giving the title to Caroline Winebrenner for one of UK's five titles on the day. Freshman Jessica Keener picked up a win over Megan Brown of Abilene Christian to take home seventh place in the flight.
In the D Flight, Alizee Paradis and Jessica Holland picked up wins in the final day. Holly Asel came up short in her bid for fifth place with a loss to Olga Koutserldl of Ohio State.
On the doubles end, Brown and Kever secured fifth place in Flight A with a win over Cowart and Haney of Auburn, 9-7. Soor and Schmitt were unable to play for seventh place because of Soor's injury. In Flight B, Jeanne Schwartz and Jessica Keener had a big 9-7 win over Dzeva and Voelker of Purdue to take third place. Paradis and Asel were also winners on the final day in Flight B.
"Our players came out after a long weekend and played with a lot of fire and determination on the last day," Mercer said. "They rose to the occasion and played well to finish things off. We learned a lot about our team and what need to work on this weekend."
