MORGANTOWN, W.Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd women's swimming and diving team will embark on another road weekend, when it competes against in-state rival West Virginia University 1 p.m. Saturday at the WVU Natatorium.
In the only meeting between the two schools, the Herd (2-1) dominated the Mountaineers (4-1), running away with a 159-66 win last season in Huntington. The meet Saturday comes one year to the date that the Herd and Mountaineers squared off for the first time.
Last weekend, Marshall ran its consecutive wins streak over Xavier University to three meets, taking a 74-43 victory in Cincinnati.
WVU hosted the WVU Relays last Saturday. The Mountaineers defeated California University of Pennsylvania, West Virginia Wesleyan, Wheeling Jesuit and Fairmont.
Sophomore Michaela Sceli (LaSalle, Ontario) broke her own 200-yard breaststroke school record by more than a second against the Musketeers. Senior Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) also set a pair of O'Connor Sports Center pool records in the 200-yard freestyle and butterfly events.
Marshall, however, will be facing a much improved Mountaineer team, which finished 5-7 in 2005 and is led by second-year head coach Sergio Lopez.
"WVU is a much improved team with a very good freshman class," Marshall head coach Leonard Kraus said. "I look for them to come out on fire which is something we cannot let happen.
"We must be ready from the start and we must step up from our performances the last two weekends or we could be in for a long day."
Following the meet Saturday at WVU, the Thundering Herd will continue its 13-meet road stretch when it travels to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne and Shippensburg in a double meet at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 28.
