WEST POINT, N.Y. - Highlighting day three of the ITA East Regional for the Thundering Herd tennis team was freshman Kellie Schmitt's upset of No. 8 seed Inga Beermann of Virginia Tech, 7-5, 2-6, 6-3 for her third win of the tournament.

"Kellie played really, really well," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "It was a high-quality match from both ends. It was high caliber playing throughout and that's the most encouraging thing.

Schmitt will play at noon Monday against Neda Mihneva of Maryland in the round of 16.

Schmitt wasn't the only one experiencing success for the Herd on Sunday at the United States Military Academy. Sophomore Shannon Brown and senior Lynzee Kever picked up a pair of wins to also advance to sweet 16 in doubles play.

Kever and Brown knocked off Christina Cutter and Amy Kim of Yale, 8-1 and followed that up with a shutout over Sarah Mayer and Taylor Baruoets of Siena, 8-0.

Jeanne Schwartz and Schmitt almost pulled off a win over William and Mary's No. 2, but came up just short, losing 8-6 in the Herd's other match of the day.

"We're playing well," Mercer said. "Hopefully, we can get our doubles team and Kellie into the semis tomorrow and see what happens. If we keep playing the way we are, we have a good chance."

Doubles play begins at 8 a.m. Monday and will be followed up by singles play.
