WEST POINT, N.Y. - Freshman Kellie Schmitt's impressive run at the ITA East Regional came to an end on Monday with a 6-3, 7-5 loss to Marianne Baker of Maryland in the quarterfinal round.
Schmitt put together an exciting run with a string of four wins in the main draw before losing to the No. 14 seed Baker. Baker had the fortune of not playing in the Sweet 16 after winning by default. Schmitt advanced to the quarters after knocking off Neda Minheva of Maryland. By doing so, Schmitt made it the furthest of any Marshall player in the draw.
In doubles play, the duo of Shannon Brown and Lynzee Kever saw their ITA East Regional come to an end against Dasha Cherkasov and Lana Krasnopolsky of Boston College, 8-3 in the round of 16.
Members of the Thundering Herd tennis team will be in action again next week at the North Carolina Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
