HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University head women's basketball coach Royce Chadwick announced today the signing of Alix Barnette to a National Letter of Intent, making her eligible to suit up for the Thundering Herd in the fall of 2006.
Barnette, a Chapel Hill, N.C., native, is a 5-foot-8 guard with remarkable numbers thus far in her career at East Chapel Hill High School. The No. 57-ranked guard in the nation and No. 223 overall by the All-Star Girls Report, Barnette averages 20.9 points, 7.0 rebounds, 2.2 steals and 3.0 assists entering her senior campaign. She was named a first team all-conference selection last season after leading the Triad AAA Conference in scoring.
"Alix is an outstanding backcourt player with tremendous skills," Chadwick said. "She can shoot the three, drive the basket and has a great mid-range game. She fills an immense need for us in that we will be losing three backcourt players after this season."
Barnette's arrival will help offset the departure of senior guards Sikeetha Shepard-Hall, Reshundra Smiley and Mary Pat Statler.
Chadwick leads the Herd into its first season of Conference USA play when the regular season opens on Nov. 18 versus Tennessee State.
