Hammond Sidelined for 2005-06 Season

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall University women's basketball head coach Royce Chadwick announced today that freshman Alyssa Hammond (Oak Hill, Ohio/Oak Hill) has sustained a season-ending knee injury that will sideline the guard/forward for the entire 2005-06 season.
"It's a tremendous blow to our team to lose such a prolific scorer," Chadwick said. "I feel bad for Alyssa because she had such high hopes for this season, but I know her tenacity will get her fully prepared for the 2006-07 season.
"Someone on our team will have to step up to fill the void."
Hammond, a two-time All-State performer at Oak Hill High School, averaged 28.1 points and 8.0 rebounds per game her senior year. She was named the Ohio Div. III Player of the Year, Southern Ohio Conference and District Player of the Year after her junior and senior campaigns and is Oak Hill's all-time leading scorer with 1,897 points.
Hammond suffered the injury during practice last week and will apply for a hardship waiver.
Marshall opens its exhibition season on Saturday when it welcomes West Virginia Wesleyan to the Cam Henderson Center at 4:30 p.m.
