HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Freshman tennis standout Kellie Schmitt put together an impressive run during the Herd's fall season and as a result, Schmitt is the highest ranked Marshall player in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Fall Rankings.
Schmitt finished the fall with a record of 7-5 in singles play and advanced to the quarterfinals of the ITA East Regional Championship en route to her No. 11 ranking. Schmitt's ranking is the highest for a Thundering Herd player in the ITA Fall Rankings since Jessica Johnson was ranked No. 8 in the fall of 2003.
"We're very excited about Kellie coming in and having a great fall for us," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "She posted some really good results and we're looking forward to seeing what she can help us do in the spring as we get ready for a great schedule with against a lot of tough competition."
Also making the rankings for the Herd was the combo of sophomore Shannon Brown and junior Lynzee Kever. The duo is ranked No. 9 in the ITA East Region Fall rankings. Brown and Kever were 9-3 in the fall for the Herd. The duo made an impressive run to the finals of the prestigious Cissie Leary Invitation before falling to the East Region's No. 1 ranked team of Melissa Anderson and Elsa O'Riain of Harvard. The No. 9 mark is the highest fall ranking since 2003 for the Herd.
The Thundering Herd will get its 2006 season underway at home on Jan. 20 when it plays host to Richmond and Wright State. The Herd will then host nationally ranked Kentucky on Jan. 21.
