HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Ball State's women's swimming and diving team edged Marshall, 155-145 on Friday in the Frederick A. Fitch Natatorium.
Junior Milla Kuurto (Lohja, Finland) led the way for the Thundering Herd with a school record setting performance in the 100-yard backstroke (58.12). Kuurto also had top finishes in the 100-yard butterfly (56.51) and the 200-yard individual medley (2:07.04).
In addition to Kuurto, senior Erika Nilsson (Haninge, Sweden) captured the top spots in each of her events including the 200-yard freestyle (1:53.80) and the 200-yard butterfly (2:07.80).
Nilsson also led the way in the 500 yard freestyle (5:05.70) where the Herd finished in the top three spots. Placing just behind Nilsson were two freshmen, Renee Lambert (Morrelville, Tenn.) placed second (5:09.20) and Danielle Chappelle (London, Ontario) finished third (5:10.35). Chappelle also had a first place finish in the 1000-yard freestyle (10:26.31) Freshman Ashley McIlvain (Brentwood, Tenn.) finished just behind Chappelle to capture the second spot in the 1000-yard freestyle with a time of 10:31.75.
Sophomore Cara Davison (Chesterton, Ind.) had the top time in the 50-yard freestyle (24.58).
"This is one of those meets were the swimming was great, but the ending was frustrating," said Marshall University Head Coach Leonard Kraus. "It was a successful meet in the terms of records being set and personal bests being achieved, but it was a tight loss."
On the boards junior Casey Mulholland (Stone Mountain, Ga.) had the top finish in both the 1-meter (245.32) and the 3-meter (268.20). Freshman Gina Sylvester (Cincinnati, Ohio) added fourth place finishes in both events with a score of 205.82 in the 1-meter and 223.05 in the 3-meter event.
"I thought the divers performed well tonight," Kraus said. "They looked like they were having fun and that's important in diving... to have fun with it."
Leading the way for the Cardinals (6-3, 4-2 MAC) was Tara Zimmer who had first place finishes in the 200-yard medley relay (1:48.71), the 200-yard breaststroke (2:27.64) and a second place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke (1:08.74).
"We're just going to have to regroup and get ready to go out and swim fast again tomorrow," said Kraus.
The Herd will conclude the regular season on Saturday against Mid-American Conference foe, Miami. The meet is set to start at 2 p.m.
