Herd Grounds Cardinals 7-0 in MAC Tennis Action
4/22/2005
BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. ? The Thundering Herd women?s tennis team continued its dominance in Mid-American Conference action with another 7-0 win, its eighth straight shutout affair, as it took down the Ball State Cardinals at the Huntington Tennis Club Friday afternoon.
Marshall improves to 15-7 overall and 7-1 in the MAC as it heads into its final regular season match of the season tomorrow against Bowling Green. Ball State falls to 13-8 on the year and 3-5 in MAC play.
?I thought we came out very focused and that?s our goal the rest of the year,? Marshall head coach John Mercer said. ?We want to keep our momentum going heading into the MAC tournament and I think we continued to do that today.?
Once again, Marshall started off strong by taking the doubles point by winning at all three spots. At No. 1, Danielle Hock (Wigan, England) and Joelle Good (Zurich, Switzerland) were 8-1 victors over Jenny Batty and Stephanie Farrar. Ashley Kroh (Louisville, Ky.) and partner Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) downed Jennifer Pollack and Haly Calderwood, 8-4 and on court three, Lille Nzudie (Douala, Cameroon) and Shannon Brown (Overland Park, Kan.) picked up an 8-3 win to close out the doubles sweep.
In singles action, it was more of the same as the Herd kept the Cardinals from taking flight.
On court one, Kroh downed Batty, 6-2, 6-2 to pick up her 88th career singles win. Nzudie then handled Calderwood, 6-1, 6-1 in the No. 2 spot as the Herd continued to roll. Good picked up her 90th career singles win to move into third place all-time on the career wins list at MU. The senior finished off Pollack, 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3. Hock stayed even with Kroh with her 88th singles win at No. 4, 6-4, 6-0. Schwartz and Brown closed out the deal, cruising to 6-0, 6-1 and 6-2, 6-1, respectively.
Marshall will now turn its attention to senior day tomorrow against Bowling Green as the winningest class in program history will play in its final home match at 1 p.m. The Thundering Herd is now 42-2 all-time in MAC play with this senior class.
The senior day celebration will take place at intermission between doubles and singles versus BGSU.
Bowling Green is 4-4 in the MAC and 12-8 overall.
