Williamsburg, Va. - In the final day of the William and Mary Invitational, the Thundering Herd tennis team had five players playing in consolation rounds and the coaching staff was pleased with the results.
Freshman Kellie Schmitt came up short against No. 46 ranked Megan Muth of William and Mary, but gave her a run for her money in the finals of the Top Flight singles draw falling 6-4, 6-3. Also in singles play, sophomore Shannon Brown lost to J.J. Larson of Virginia Tech in Flight C singles 6-1, 4-6, 6-2.
"I was really impressed with the way Kellie and Shannon played this weekend," Kellie was playing point for point with Muth and that's very encouraging because she's one of the best in the country and Shannon has really worked hard and stepped up her game. "
In doubles play, the Herd faired well with two victories. In Flight B doubles, the tandem of Jeanne Schwartz and Alizee Paradis downed Michelle Paulter and Anita Ivancevic of Brown 8-3. Also, in Flight C doubles, Karolina Soor and Schmitt handily defeated Jennifer Dent and Masha Senic of Maryland 8-1.
"We won some very good doubles matches this weekend," Mercer said. "Karolina and Kellie were overpowering teams and Jeanne has really worked on volleying and standing in there at the net and I think that helped her Ali."
Overall, Mercer was pleased with what he saw from the team this weekend against several top 75 programs.
"We were really encouraged from what we saw this weekend," he said. "We had some really good wins over teams from the ACC and Ivy League. We learned a lot from this tournament and are really encouraged that we have a bright future ahead with a lot of potential. It's looking good, but we've got to stay hungry and keep working and play the role of underdog this year."
