HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall women's tennis players Lynzee Kever and Shannon Brown are having a successful trip through tbe brackets at the Penn Invitational this weekend in Philadelphia.
In singles play, Kever defeated Brittany Holland of Princeton 6-3, 6-2 then turned around and downed Zeynip Altiray of Binghamton 6-2, 7-6 (4) to advance to the Sweet 16 against Andrea Niculescu of Penn State Saturday afternoon.
Brown had a solid win over Wisconsin's Kaylan Caiti 7-6 (0), 1-6, 1-0 (3) in the first round, but ended up losing in the second round to Melissa Anderson of Harvard. Brown will play a consolation match later today.
"I thought we played well in singles," Marshall head coach John Mercer. "They both had good wins and we keep working on getting better. Lynzee hadn't played a match in five months so she's a little tired, but she can really play. It seems like the better the competition the better she gets."
In doubles, the Herd is making some noise as it had wins over Penn and Princeton Friday and Saturday morning it went on to down Maslesa/Kurshima of Temple and the No. 1 seed from William and Mary of Levy/Zoricic 8-6 to advance to the finals on Sunday.
"They've played really well together," Mercer said. "And they're definitely getting better as the tournament goes along. Shannon and Lynzee have never played together before and it wasn't really smooth at first, but they're learning fast and looking good as we keep advancing. They've had some big wins, especially beating William and Mary's number one team."
Herdzone.com will have more updates throughout the weekend on the progress of Kever and Brown.
