PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - For never playing together before, Marshall tennis players Shannon Brown and Lynzee Kever showed a lot of promise for the Herd tennis team as the duo reached the finals of the Penn Invitational before falling in the finals 8-1 Sunday.
Brown and Kever travled to Philadelphia with head coach John Mercer this weekend to represent the Herd in the prestigious Cissie Leary/Penn Invitational where top players from teams mainly from the East Region are invited to participate. Both players played singles and teamed together and put up some impressive results in doubles.
The Herd had wins over Penn, Princeton and Temple along with an incredible win over the No. 1 seed of Levy/Zoricic of William and Mary to advance to the finals on Sunday. Brown and Kever faced the Harvard duo of O'Riain/Anderson, but came up short of winning it all as the Ivy Leaguers went on to an 8-1 victory.
"It was a really good tournament for us," Mercer said. "They hadn't played together before and really posted some good results. Unfortunately, we didn't get the last win, but the Harvard team has been playing together for awhile and they're a very good team. We've still got some work to do, but I think this weekend was good for us to post some results and gain confidence from playing at that level."
Kever also made a run in singles all the way to the Elite 8 before falling to Milena Kachar of Colombia 6-3, 6-2.
Kever hadn't played a match due to medical reasons in five months since transferring from the University of Colorado, but was impressive in her Thundering Herd debut.
"She's off to a good start," Mercer said. "She's trying to play her way back into shape and get as much work as she can. Lynzee showed what she can do this weekend and we expect a lot of good things out of her."
The Herd will be back in action this weekend as a team at the Kentucky Fall Invitational.
