LEXINGTON, Ky. - Lynzee Kever and Karolina Soor highlighted the day for the Thundering Herd tennis team as each advanced to the semifinal rounds in their respective flights of play on Friday in the opening day of the UK Fall Invitational.

The Herd had 10 players in action Friday in Lexington, Ky., at the UK Fall Invite along with 11 other teams from around the country.

"We're making progress," head coach John Mercer said. "I thought we were hitting the ball well today, but we need to get more consistent with our match play. We're gaining a lot of experience playing in these tournament and hopefully with time and effort we're going to be really good."

In Flight A singles, Lynzee Kever advanced to the semifinals with two wins. In the first round, she downed Lucia Vojtkova of Eastern Kentucky, 3-6, 6-1, 6-1. She went on to take her second round match 6-3, 6-0 over Ashley Cowart of Auburn to advance to the semis where she will meet a familiar opponent in Suzanna Makovic of Denver.

Also in Flight A, after losing her first match to Kim Coventry of Kentucky, Shannon Brown bounced back for a win to advance to the back draw semifinals. Kellie Schmitt is also in the semifinals of the back draw in Flight B.

Karolina Soor is also representing the Herd in the winners bracket semifinals in Flight C. Soor downed Ina Durckakova of Eastern Kentucky and Megan Brown of Abilene Christian to get there.

In doubles, Schmitt and Soor will face UK's No. 1 team of Coventry and Joelle Schwenk in the front draw of Flight A on Saturday after knocking off ETSU on Friday. Brown and Kever also advanced in Flight A after knocking off EKU. Jessica Keener and Jeanne Schwartz also advanced in Flight B doubles after knocking off a tandem from Louisville.

On the day, the Herd got wins from nine of ten players.

"I think all in all, it was a good day," Mercer said. "They did pretty well, but we let a couple matches get away from us that hopefully in the spring we'll win."

The Herd will be in action the rest of the weekend at UK. Herdzone.com will provide updates when available. Also, www.ukathletics.com will have results posted throughout the weekend.
