Marshall Drops Appalachian State, 64-60

BOONE, N.C. (AP) - Tre Whitted scored 14 points to lead Marshall to a 64-60 victory over Appalachian State on Wednesday.

Mark Patton scored 14 points for the Thundering Herd (6-5), which led the entire game.

Jeremy Clayton had 11 points and 13 rebounds for the Mountaineers (5-8), who had three players score in double figures. Nathan Cranford and D.J. Thompson each had 14 points for ASU.

The Mountaineers pulled to within 62-60 on a Thompson jumper with 20 seconds left in the game. But nine seconds later, Whitted scored a layup that put the game out of reach.

Marshall's Chris Ross stole the ball with five seconds left to seal the victory.
