HANOVER, N.H.- Marshall University's Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt put on a solid first day performance at the ITA East Regional Saturday winning a pair of matches.

The Herd's top duo is the No. 2 seed in the tournament's main draw and ousted a Hofstra's Lara Crouch and Stacey Kent 8-0.

Marshall's second match came against Long Island's H'ann Johnson and Merve Koksal with the Herd once again victorious 8-3. Marshall head coach John Mercer said the team played well and will have to follow-up with another strong performance Sunday.

"We got off to good starts in both matches," he said. "Hopefully we can continue that tomorrow and we are playing a team coming off a big upset. We need to be fired up to play tomorrow and continue what we are doing."

Kever and Schmitt will play another doubles match Sunday against Pittsburgh's Kristy Borza and Leah Friedman at 8:45 a.m. The Pittsburgh tandem knocked off the tournament's No. 11 seed Virginia in the second round.

The singles side of the competition has the Herd ranked highly and with opening round byes. Schmitt is the East Regional's overall No. 1 seed in the main draw, which is the highest ranking for any player in the regional in school history, and Kever is the No. 9.

Both Kever and Schmitt will begin singles competition Sunday and face opponents that are yet to be determined. Mercer said regardless of who the two play it will be top-flight competition.

"They will be playing winners tomorrow and they are excited to start singles after getting started in doubles today," he said. "Tomorrow will definitely be tough matches. We have to take what's given to us and hopefully play some good tennis and get deeper into the tournament."
