HANOVER, N.H. - Marshall University's Kellie Schmitt won two matches on Monday and advanced to the ITA East Regional semifinal.
The Pittsburgh native faced Boston College's Dasha Cherkasov in her first match of the day and won in straight sets 6-1, 6-4.
Schmitt's second match would be her toughest competition of the tournament as she faced Eleanor Peters of Maryland. The Thundering Herd sophomore battled with Peters to a victory in three sets, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6(2).
Marshall head coach John Mercer said he was pleased with Schmitt's gutsy performance.
"She had two really good wins today against two really good players," "We can't be more proud of her effort. Hopefully she will play well tomorrow against another nationally ranked opponent."
Schmitt will face Baier Ko of Harvard in the semifinal at 10 a.m. on Tuesday. The winner of the match will be entered into the ITA Indoor Championships as well as advance into the East Regional finals.
Schmitt and doubles partner Lynzee Kever also competed in the doubles draw. In their quarterfinal match the duo faced the team of Julia Koulbitskaya and Yulia Rivelis of Penn. The Herd was able to take the victory 8-4 in the afternoon's first doubles match.
"It was a great accomplishment to reach the semifinals in this tournament," Mercer said. "There are 91 teams in our region so it is a great accomplishment to get this far."
Kever and Schmitt found themselves in the semifinals against a familiar team from Maryland. The Marshall tandem defeated the Terps' Marianne Baker and Peters at the William & Mary Tournament in September, but Monday's match would be a different story. Maryland was able to take the win 8-5 over the Herd's top team.
"When all the players are this good you aren't going to win them all," Mercer said. "They competed hard and gave it a good shot. We'll be back and get some more good wins as the fall goes along.
