CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - The Marshall Thundering Herd tennis squad finished day one of the Kitty Harrison Invitational hosted by the University of North Carolina on Friday.

The day was highlighted with a pair of doubles victories by Karolina Soor and Yulia Kashelkina advancing them into the finals of the "Carolina doubles" draw. Also in the tournament's "White singles" Jessica Keener defeated East Tennessee State's Whitney Trotter in straight sets as did Jeanne Schwartz over UNC-Greensboro's Valerie Behr.

The Herd played 12 matches in total picking up wins in seven of them. Marshall head coach John Mercer said the youthful team needs some experience playing top-caliber competition.

"The majority of the players being freshmen and sophomores have a lot to learn," he said. "We are trying to figure out what its like to play at this level every match, every set and every point."

Marshall was without sophomore Kellie Schmitt for the tournament. Mercer said Schmitt did not make the tournament because of the number of matches the sophomore has already competed in.

The Herd will continue competition again on Saturday with singles matches and the conclusion of doubles play. Mercer said he is optimistic about the team's fortune for day two.

"Hopefully we learned a lot today," he said. "Hopefully the things we do well, we will do better tomorrow. Sometimes you have to take some bumps and bruises to get where you want to go."
