PRINCETON, N.J. - Princeton's Kyle Koncz scored a game-high 20 points to lead the Tigers past the Thundering Herd, 61-45, Saturday afternoon at Jadwin Gym in Princeton. Marshall senior guard Chris Ross led the Thundering Herd with a career-high 17 points.
The Herd took the lead early on a few fast break opportunities early on and held the lead for the first ten minutes of the contest. However, the Tigers settled down into its slow-down, shot-clock eating offense and chipped away at the Thundering Herd. Princeton took the lead with a three by Justin Conway to make the score, 14-12. The Tigers never looked back from that point forward for the rest of the game.
Princeton led by six at the break, 27-20, but opened the second half on an 8-0 run to push the Tiger lead to 15. The Herd would get no closer than ten the rest of the way.
The visiting Herd could not contain the hot shooting Tigers, who shot 47.6% from the floor and 37.5% from three. Meanwhile, Marshall fired in 39.1% of its shots and 20% from beyond the arc. Princeton also continued the trend of free throw efficiency by Herd opponents; the Tigers shot 85.7% from the charity stripe.
Ross was the only Herd player in double-digits with 17. Sophomore Markel Humphrey grabbed nine rebounds to lead Marshall on the glass.
Koncz was the only Tiger player in double-digits with 20 points.
The Herd returns to action Friday night with a home game against former MAC rival Bowling Green. Tip-off is at 7 p.m. at the Henderson Center.
