HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (AP) -Marshall built a 21-point first-half lead and used timely second half shooting to upset Virginia Tech 59-58 Saturday
Leading 57-56 with 16 seconds left in the game, Marshalls Tre Whitted knocked down a pair of free throws to stretch the advantage to three.
Virginia Tech's Coleman Collins put back a missed shot with six seconds on the clock, making the score 59-58.
Following a missed foul shot by Marshall's Markel Humphrey with five seconds to go, Techs Zabian Dowdell raced up the court only to have the games final shot deflected by Jean Francois Bro-Grebe.
Marshall (4-8) came out firing in the first half behind 17 points from Mark Dorris, who made three baskets from beyond the arc to push the Herd out to a 38-17 lead.
Virginia Tech (9-4) outscored Marshall 22-11 to open the second half, staying within striking distance. The Hokies led 56-55 with a minute and a half to play but could not hold on.
