BOONE, N.C. - Appalachian State's trio of Brittany Zahn, Dianna Thomas and Lorelle Rau was difficult to handle as they led the Mountaineers to victory against the Marshall Thundering Herd 3-0 (30-25, 30-24, 30-26) in the Mast General Store Appalachian Classic Friday night.
Rau's 35 assists coupled with Zahn's 12 kills and Thomas' 11 were too much for the Herd to overcome. The Herd falls to 12-23-1 all-time against Appalachian State and 12-20 in season opening matches.
"It was a tough night for us," Marshall head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Appalachian State played real well tonight."
Herd junior outside hitter Stephanie Cahill (Louisville, Ky.) was hurt to begin game two and left the match after scoring seven kills.
"Steph had to come out because of her injury," Jacobs said. "We never really recovered after that."
Leading the Herd were freshmen Kristin Marcum (Arlington, Texas) with 12 digs and Emily Sullivan (Cincinnati, Ohio) put away nine kills. For the upperclassmen, senior setter Christin Bimberg (Schwerin, Germany) posted 20 assists and Uche Ndubisi (Indianapolis, Ind.) was landed four blocks all in game 3..
"Kristin Marcum had an awesome collegiate debut," Jacobs said. "And Uche had a great game three for us."
Marshall will face Middle Tennessee at noon and Radford at 5 p.m. Saturday to wrap-up play at the Appalachian Classic.
