CINCINNATI, Ohio - Despite outshooting Western Illinois 13-9, the Marshall men's soccer team could not find the back of the net in a 2-0 loss to the Leathernecks Friday in the opening game of the Marriott Kingsgate Xavier Challenge at the Xavier Soccer Complex in Cincinnati, Ohio.
Western Illinois (2-1) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute when Luke Greenwell headed a shot to the corner of the net past Marshall goalkeeper Greg Terhune (Sr., Indianapolis, Ind.). Preston Bernardi earned an assist on the play.
The teams went scoreless over the next 70 minutes before Elton Fernandes put the game away with a goal on a Jona Andrade assist at the 84:45 mark.
The two Western Illinois goals came on the Leathernecks' only two shots on goal in the contest. Marshall (1-2) finished with five shots on goal, including two each from Karim Boukhemis (Sr., Huntington, W.Va.) and Avneet Shergill (Jr., Vancouver, Wash.). Marshall also had eight corner kicks to none for Western Illinois.
Marshall returns to the Xavier Challenge at noon Sunday to take on DePaul.
