WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd tennis competed in the second day of the William & Mary Invitational and improved with 12 wins.
Herd head coach John Mercer said the team competed with more determination.
"As a team we were hoping to play more relaxed and we stuck with our game plan against each opponent," he said. "We had a much better day. We had some tough draws and were able to beat some really good players."
In the tournament's Flight A singles, the Herd's Kellie Schmitt had two dominant outings in the consolation quarters and semis. Her 6-0, 6-0 victory over Jennifer Stevens of Virginia in the semis was a high-quality win.
"Kellie won two really good matches," Mercer said. "Her concentration was a lot better."
In Flight D of singles competition, Karolina Soor advanced to the finals by defeating Richmond's Ashley Vosters in two sets, 6-1, 6-3.
"We are really excited about her accomplishment," Mercer said. "Hopefully she is going to continue to improve and get better."
The tournament's Flight F singles saw Anna Volkova take third overall by defeating Virginia Tech's Chelsea Cramp, 6-4, 6-2.
In Flight A of the doubles draw, No. 34 Schmitt and Lynzee Kever were bested by North Carolina's duo of Caitlin Collins and Sanaz Marand, 8-3.
"We played with a lot of confidence," Mercer said. "Going into tournaments like this you of course want to win more than you lose. We are going to continue to try to get better."
The tournament will continue Sunday and updates are available at tribeathletics.com.
