Herd Drops Close Battle with Kentucky, 4-3

LEXINGTON, Ky. - The Marshall Thundering Herd women's team battled the 19th-ranked Kentucky Wildcats to a hard-fought 4-3 loss Saturday night.

The No. 60 Herd (2-1) played its first ranked opponent of the season was unable to get out in front of the Wildcats (4-0) dropping the doubles point. However, the Herd's duo of No. 35 Kellie Schmitt and Lynzee Kever was able to topple the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's No. 3 tandem of Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk, 8-4.

Marshall went down 4-0 before Schmitt won the first point in singles by knocking off Coventry 7-6, 6-3. The win rallied the Herd to pick up the remaining points with wins by No. 94 Thaddea Lock and Jeanne Schwartz.

"We played a really good team who is athletic from top to bottom," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "We competed well and gave it a really good shot."

Mercer said the match with the highly touted UK squad was valuable for his young team.

"We learned that we can compete at a very high level and can win matches. We stayed together as a team and were able to come away with some big wins. We didn't quit and that says a lot about the character of our young team."

Marshall will be at home for three matches in the coming week with the first coming against 25th-ranked Virginia on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 11 a.m. at the Huntington Tennis Club.
