HUNTINGTON, W. Va. - The Marshall University women's basketball team will open up its exhibition season with a home contest against Kentucky State University starting at 7 p.m. on Wednesday night at the Cam Henderson Center.
Marshall went 15-15 last season and will have a new look this year, featuring seven newcomers, along with eight returning letter winners. Four seniors from last year have moved on, including leading scorer Modupe Ishola along with KaShawna Curry, Bridget Chacon and Jill Justice.
Over 63% of the Herd's scoring returns this year, led by junior Meg Withrow. Withrow averaged ten points per game last season, second only behind Ishola's 13.7. Another junior, Kendra King, appeared in all 30 games last year, starting 25. She was one of the Herd's most versatile players, ranking near the top in several categories, including second on the team in rebounds and blocks and fifth in scoring.
Meagan Samis and Melody Hudson lead this year's senior class, which also includes Kizzy Hart. Samis is another prolific scorer, averaging 9.1 points last season, third behind Withrow and Ishola. Hudson excels on the other end of the floor as one of Marshall's top defensive players. Hart, a former NJCAA First Team All-American at Labette (Kan.) Community College, has one year of eligibility remaining and is expected to make an immediate impact.
Kentucky State enters the season after a solid 19-9 campaign in 2006-07. The Thorobrettes averaged 67 points per game last year and bring back their top two scorers, Cortney Matthewis and Mattie Jones, who averaged 16.8 and 12.2 points per game, respectively.
After Kentucky State, the Herd will play one more exhibition game, hosting West Virginia Wesleyan on Sunday at 6 p.m.
Both games will be carried on WMUL 88.1 FM, Marshall's student radio station. The broadcasts will also be carried live on the web at http://www.marshall.edu/wmul/ . The Kentucky State pre-game show is set to start at 6:30 before the live game broadcast at 7 p.m.
