Herd Resumes Action At Marriott Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Following a ten-day layoff for Christmas break, the Marshall women's basketball team will return to action this weekend with two games at the Marriott Cavalier Classic, which is being hosted by the University of Virginia on Friday and Saturday.

Marshall and Missouri will open the tournament on Friday at 4:30 pm and will be followed by Delaware State and Virginia at 7 pm. On Saturday, the losers of Friday's games will face off at 4:30 while the winners will play for the championship at 7 pm.

In its last time out, the Thundering Herd outlasted the University of Texas at Arlington, 97-91, in three overtimes to improve its record to 7-4.

Senior Kizzy Hart scored a career-high 24 points in the game, 16 coming in overtime. Casey Baker and Tynikki Crook also had career days with Baker setting a new career mark with 22 points and Crook notching the first double-double of her career with 11 points and 11 boards. Baker also recorded four steals at UTA, bringing her total to 29 over the last five games. Her season average of 3.64 steals per game puts her atop Conference USA.

Missouri comes into the contest with a record of 6-5. The Tigers had a nine day layoff, falling to Illinois, 66-52, in their last game. Alyssa Hollins leads Missouri, averaging 17.5 points per game. That total puts her second in the Big 12.

Saturday's potential opponents for Marshall are Delaware State and host Virginia. The Cavaliers are 7-4 thus far and received two votes in the latest AP Poll. Last Thursday, Virginia downed Davidson, 83-68. Prior to that, they faced then #2 Connecticut, falling by a 75-45 margin. Delaware State comes into the tournament with a 3-7 mark. The defending Mid-Eastern Conference champions have lost four straight following a December 1 win over Army.

Both games can be heard live on Marshall's student station, WMUL 88.1-FM, which will also utilize a web broadcast at www.marshall.edu/wmul.

On January 5, the Herd will return to the Cam Henderson Center to open up the C-USA portion of its schedule against the defending champions, East Carolina. The game, which starts at 5 pm will be the second in a doubleheader with the men's team, who will face Winthrop at 2 pm.
