DALLAS - The Marshall women's basketball team will attempt to snap a two-game losing streak, its longest such streak in nearly two months, when it faces the SMU Mustangs in a key Conference USA clash on Sunday at Moody Coliseum. Tip-off is at 3 p.m. ET.
Marshall (14-10, 7-4) traveled to the Lone Star state today after suffering a 74-58 loss at Tulsa on Friday. The defending C-USA champions held MU to 25 percent shooting in the second half after the Thundering Herd offense overcame a 10-point deficit in the opening frame.
The Herd had not lost two straight since dropping consecutive contests to Virginia and Ohio in December.
Point guard Meg Withrow (Nitro, W.Va.) continued her strong play on Friday with a team-high 19 points, her fifth straight game in which she led the Herd in scoring.
SMU (13-10, 5-6) is 9-3 at Moody Coliseum this season. The Mustangs have lost five of their last seven games, including Friday's 12-point setback to East Carolina that snapped a two-game win streak.
C-USA Preseason All-Conference selection Janielle Dodds, a junior, leads SMU in scoring, rebounding and blocked shots with 14.9 points, 7.3 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. She is also quite efficient at the free-throw line, sinking 81.4 percent of her attempts (92-for-113).
Junior guard Katy Cobb scored a game-high 16 points in the Mustangs' 72-57 win at Marshall last season, with all of her points coming in the second half. Cobb is netting 8.5 points per game this season, along with a team-high 2.8 assists per contest.
Marshall and SMU will play only the second game of this series since the two schools joined C-USA a year ago. The Mustangs dealt the Herd a 15-point loss at the Cam Henderson Center on Jan. 29, 2006, its second-worst home loss of that campaign.
Sunday's game can be seen via live video streaming on smumustangs.com. The game can also be heard live on Marshall's student station, WMUL 88.1-FM, which will also utilize a web broadcast at www.marshall.edu/wmul.
