IRVING, Texas - Marshall center Modupe Ishola (Washington, D.C.) was named to the All-Conference USA Women's Basketball Second Team while guard/forward Alyssa Hammond (Oak Hill, Ohio) was selected to the All-Freshman Team, the league office announced today.
Ishola led C-USA in field goal percentage (57.6 percent, 21st in NCAA) for the second straight year and ranks third in the league in rebounding (10.3 rpg, 17th in NCAA). The senior is one of three C-USA players to average a double-double per game, combining 13.7 ppg (11th in C-USA) with her stout rebound total en route to 14 double-doubles on the season (2nd in C-USA).
"Modupe posted the numbers to warrant the consideration she received to be named all-conference," Marshall head coach Royce Chadwick said. "We're excited that she was named to the team and we're very proud of her."
Ishola's second team nod is the third straight appearance on an all-conference second team for a Thundering Herd player. Former standout guard Sikeetha Shepard-Hall was a second team member on the 2005 Mid-American Conference team and on last season's C-USA second team.
Ishola attained her 1,000th career point this season to become just the third center in school history to reach the plateau. She is also the only player in Marshall annals with 1,000 points, 800 rebounds and 100 blocks. Her 299 rebounds and 38 blocks on the season rank as the third most in school single-season history.
Hammond becomes the first Marshall player to make an all-freshman team since Shepard-Hall in 2003. She was second behind Ishola on the team in field goal percentage (41.9) and ranked eighth among C-USA freshmen, fourth on the team, in scoring with 7.2 points per game.
Hammond's 20 3-pt. field goals are second most on the team.
"When you compare her to the other freshmen in the league, Alyssa played a lot of minutes and posted some big numbers this season," Chadwick said. "She's steadily improved as we've gone along in the year and she has really only scratched the surface of her potential."
Hammond recorded a career-high 23 points at Niagara on Dec. 21, the fourth-highest single-game total among C-USA freshmen. She logged four starts this season, her redshirt freshman campaign, after missing the entire 2005-06 season due to a knee injury.
Ishola and Hammond join teammate Kendra King (Fairfax, Va.) as the Herd's postseason award winners. King was named to the C-USA All-Academic Team on Monday. Individual award winners (Player of the Year, etc.) will be announced tomorrow.
Chadwick's Thundering Herd will enter the C-USA Championship in Tulsa, Okla., as the No. 8 seed and face No. 9 Houston in a Thursday first round matchup. Tip-off from the Donald W. Reynold's Center is at 2 p.m. ET.
