RICHMOND, Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd women's tennis team was unable to gather momentum against the Richmond Spiders and were handed a 5-2 loss on Sunday.

Marshall head coach John Mercer said the Herd's opponent was up and ready for the Sunday's match.

"We are really impressed with Richmond," he said "They played a much more inspired match and for that I have to give them the credit for taking the match to us."

Marshall (11-7) started the match by losing its ninth doubles point of the season to Richmond (2-6). The only Herd doubles win came in the No. 3 position by Jessica Keener and Jeanne Schwartz, who defeated Xenia Schneider and Jelena Zivanovic, 8-1.

The Herd's struggles continued in singles play with only two Marshall victories. Karolina Soor was able to take a win over Richmond's Robin Carter, 7-5, 6-2, in the second spot in the lineup. In the No. 5 position, Schwartz took a 6-0, 6-1, win over Schneider.

"They (Richmond) were willing to work hard," Mercer said. "We not disciplined and hopefully Richmond taught us a good lesson that we have to show up and compete in every match, every day."

Marshall will be back in action when it travels to San Diego, Calif., to take on Yale and San Diego for matches on March 21 and 23.
