BARBOURSVILLE, W.Va. - The Marshall Thundering Herd women's tennis team won its first regional match of the season defeating Penn State 4-3 at the Huntington Tennis Club on Friday.

The Herd (10-5) knocked off its second Big Ten Conference team of the season by taking the victory over Penn State (3-6) and previously beating Ohio State.

"We have had some great tennis matches over the years," Marshall head coach John Mercer said. "And this was certainly another one of them."

Marshall captured the doubles point with the teams of Lynzee Kever and Kellie Schmitt along with Thaddea Lock and Karolina Soor victorious. Kever and Schmitt took the match over Sasha Abraham and Lauren Holzberg, 8-6. At the No. 2 position Lock and Soor dispatched Sarah Lotto and Jenny Schular, 8-3.

The Herd did not find victories as easily in singles play as the Nittany Lions stormed out to win the first two points. However, Soor broke through for the Herd picking up a 6-2, 6-4, victory over Abraham. Marshall picked up its third point with Schmitt taking a win, 7-6 (6), 6-3, over Andreea Niculescu to giving the Herd a 3-2 lead with two matches to play.

In the deciding match Lock produced a three-set performance winning, 7-5, 1-6, 7-5, over Dorothy Dohanics to even the all-time series with Penn State, 3-3.

"This was just an example of a great college tennis match," Mercer said. "It was competitive right down to the very end and we were able to come out on top. Now we have to get ready for Sunday's match."

Marshall will face Middle Tennessee next. The match is scheduled for a noon start on Sunday at the Huntington Tennis Club.
