SAN DIEGO - The Thundering Herd women's tennis team claimed a 5-2 victory over the Yale Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon on the campus of the University of San Diego.
Sophomore Kellie Schmitt (Pittsburgh, Pa.) is now with one win of the Marshall single season wins record after she defeated Yale's Janet Kim, 6-1, 6-4. Schmitt also helped the Herd to the doubles point, combining with Karolina Soor (Lindesberg, Sweden) in an 8-3 win over the Bulldogs' Christine Alford and Olivia Nix.
Other Marshall winners were Soor's 6-4, 6-4 win over Sarah Lederhandler, Jeanne Schwartz (West Palm Beach, Fla.) with a 7-5, 6-3 win over Olivia Nix, and Jessica Keener's (Reston, Va.) 6-0, 6-2 win over Lilian Nguyen. The Herd's Lynzee Kever (Edmond, Okla.) dropped her match to Yale's Christine Alford when she had to retire in the third set because of a wrist injury (2-6, 6-2, 3-2, ret.).
"I thought the team did a really good job competing today, especially with all of the injuries and people out of the lineup," said Marshall head coach John Mercer. "We responded and played the match today with good focus."
The Herd returns to action against the host Torreros on Friday morning. The match is slated to begin at 10 a.m. PST.
